For the Golden Gate National Park Conservancy
Phleger Estate in San Mateo County, CA
Completed: 2012
Campbell Grading, Inc. and The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy (GGNPC), in conjunction with the National Park Service (NPS), restored a section of forest habitat in Phleger Estate. This project was part of a Natural Resource Damage Assessment settlement following the unauthorized felling of trees on GGNRA lands by the Bella Vista Restaurant in 1999. The restoration project area had been impacted by a-variety of human activities that contributed to accelerated erosion and habitat degradation- Timber harvest operations cleared the original redwood forest from the site in the 1850's. More recent equestrian and hiking usage resulted in the formation of multiple non-designated trails that ascend and traverse the hill slope in a chaotic pattern. In addition, several large erosion gullies formed in association with a historic skid road and the trails.
Campbell Grading, Inc. restored the forest habitat within the project area through the removal of non-designated trails, stabilization of the gullies, and preparation of all disturbed areas for eventual re-vegetation. Campbell Grading, Inc. completed approximately 2,000 l.f. of social trail decommission with trail equipment (including required scarification and de-compaction), approximately 160 l.f. of social trail decommission with hand tools, and placing approximately 500 l.f. of woody debris (generated during the vegetation removal phase) for erosion and pedestrian controls.
