Step Pools at Muir Beach after Winter Storm

This photograph shows one of the nine step pools built on the steepest section of the upper alluvial at Muir Beach. The photo was taken the day after the big storm event on December 8th.

It shows them functioning as they were designed, which is to slow and pool the intermittent storm water flowing through the sub-watershed. Eventually the water drains into Redwood Creek.

The site was also active with numerous critters. A California newt (Taricha torosa) is shown below in one of the step pools.
